The Mining industry and the mining economy in Goa has been in existence in Goa since the pre liberation time and has been a major economic contributor to the State, both in terms of revenue and employment. It is known that after the Supreme Court passed its Judgment of 7th February 2018 for various reasons set out therein, the mining industry and the mining economy in Goa has come to a stop.
Thus after the pronouncement of the said Judgment, it was the duty of the State and Central Governments to bring about a legally sustainable solution to the issue so as to restart mining activity in Goa. However, the State Government and the Central Government have failed to solve the States mining issue by bringing about a legally sustainable solution.
While State Government delegations have met many in the Union Cabinet including the Prime Minister, no solution to this issue has yet been articulated by those in power.
Presently Goa’s economy is crumbling with the Government borrowing money to run the States affairs. Infact the economic survey of 2018-19 tabled in the Assembly has revealed that the State’s economy has suffered due to meager contribution from the mining industry.
Thus in the interest of the State, this issue needs to be solved by conceiving and envisaging a legally sustainable solution.
